Terms of Service
Last updated September 2026
These terms apply when you register a child for a MarinChess program, or use this website. By registering you agree to them on behalf of yourself and your child.
Registration and enrollment
Some of our programs are registered for directly with us. Others are run in partnership with a school, district or parks and recreation department, and those registrations, payments and refunds are handled by that organization under its own terms. Each program page tells you which applies before you sign up.
Where we handle registration ourselves, a place is confirmed once payment is received and we email you the program details. Places are limited by the space each school provides and are allocated in the order registrations arrive. If a program is full or does not reach the minimum enrollment to run, we will tell you and refund you in full. One registration covers one child for one session, so please submit a separate registration for each child.
Fees and payment
Some programs are charged per session and some per class attended; the fee and how it is charged are shown on that program’s registration page before you pay. Fees cover instruction, boards and materials. Payment is due at registration and is processed by our payment provider, or by the partner organization where it handles registration for that program.
Cancellations and refunds
For programs you register for with us, you can cancel at any time, for any reason, and we will refund you for the classes your child has not yet attended. There is no deadline and no cancellation fee - just email us and we will process it. Where a partner organization handles registration, its own cancellation policy applies instead.
If we cancel a session, or cannot deliver classes we have committed to, we refund the classes not delivered automatically.
We do not refund individual missed classes when a student stays enrolled, including absences for illness, holidays or school closures, since the instructor and materials are committed for that class either way.
Schedule changes
Programs run on the day and time shown at registration. Occasionally a school closure, weather or an instructor emergency requires us to move or cancel a class. We will tell you as soon as we can and, where possible, add a make-up class at the end of the session.
Conduct and supervision
We ask students to treat instructors, classmates and equipment with respect. If a student’s behaviour repeatedly prevents others from learning, we will raise it with you and with the school, and may remove the student from the program; a pro-rated refund is at our discretion in that case.
Our supervision begins when a student arrives at the classroom and ends when the class does. Arrangements for getting to and from the classroom, and for pick-up afterwards, are between you and the school.
Health and safety
Please tell us about allergies, medical conditions or support needs in the notes field when you register, so the instructor can prepare. Our instructors are not able to administer medication. All instructors complete a background check before their first session.
Website use
The text, images and curriculum materials on this site belong to MarinChess. You are welcome to share links to any page. Please do not copy our materials for use in another program.
Liability
Chess is a low-risk activity, but participation is at your own risk. To the extent the law allows, our liability arising from a program is limited to the fee you paid for it. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
