Accessibility Statement
Last updated October 2026
MarinChess wants every family, student and school to be able to learn about our programs, register and reach us without barriers.
If something on this site does not work for you, email leo@marinchess.com.
Our goal
We build and check this website against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. We see accessibility as ongoing work and will keep improving the site as we learn.
What we have done
- Every page declares its language, has a descriptive title and a “Skip to main content” link, and uses a clear heading structure with header, main and footer areas.
- Menus, buttons, links, questions and forms work with a keyboard and show a visible focus outline. The mobile menu closes with the Escape key and returns you to the menu button.
- The puzzle of the week on the homepage can be played with the arrow keys and Enter or Space, and each square is announced with its name and the piece on it.
- Secondary text was brightened so that it meets WCAG contrast requirements against our dark background.
- Form fields have visible labels and optional fields are marked. If something is missing or in the wrong format, a message appears next to the field, explains how to fix it and is read out by screen readers. What you have typed is kept.
- Dates, times, prices and locations for our programs are written as text on the page, not only in images.
- Animations turn off automatically when your device is set to reduce motion.
Accessibility settings
Select the round accessibility button in the lower-left corner of any page, or press Alt + Shift + A, to open the accessibility menu. Your choices are saved in your browser and apply on every page.
- Navigate by page structure: jump to any region or heading on the page.
- Focus: a thicker, high-visibility keyboard focus outline.
- Cursor: a larger mouse pointer.
- Highlight: outline links, then buttons, headings and form fields, in four steps.
- Contrast: high contrast dark, high contrast light, or soft contrast. Photographs are left as they are.
- Color Shift: warm, low-blue colors for text and backgrounds.
- Animation: turn off animations.
- Text Size: enlarge text to 125%, 150% or 200%.
- Spacing: add space between letters, words and lines.
- Font: a readable sans-serif, a readable serif, or bold sans-serif.
- Reset: return all of these to their defaults.
These settings are optional. The site is designed to work without them, and alongside your browser’s zoom and your device’s own accessibility features.
Known limitations
- Payment for Friday Night Chess Camp happens on a secure checkout page run by our payment processor, Stripe. Our accessibility settings do not apply there.
- Some after-school programs are registered through schools or partners, such as San Rafael Recreation, on their own websites, which we do not control.
- News articles and social media links open on other websites.
- Photo descriptions are short. If a photo shows something you need to know, ask us and we will describe it.
Tell us about a barrier
If you have trouble using any part of this site, or need information in a different format, email leo@marinchess.com or use our contact form. It helps to tell us the page you were on, what you were trying to do, and the device or assistive technology you use. We will work with you to get you the information or registration you need.
